Navas reveals Real Madrid struggles

Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas has claimed that he 'did not know' that he would be Los Blancos' back-up stopper this season.

Navas arrived at the Bernabeu last summer off the back of a successful season for Levante and impressive 2014 World Cup for Costa Rica.

However, the 28-year-old has been second choice behind Iker Casillas all season, despite the Spaniard's struggles.

"If I don't play, I can't prove my worth. Just because I don't complain to the press doesn't mean that I'm not struggling. I wanted to play more [this season]. I never thought about being a backup," Navas, who started Real Madrid's 4-1 win over Espanyol on Sunday, told reporters.

"It's true that I've had a difficult year, but I've always tried to do my best and be professional. When I played, I tried to do my best. My [positive] attitude and desire have helped me cope.

"I hope next year will be different and that I earn a starting role. I have a contract for five years and have a positive mindset."

Manchester United's David de Gea is reportedly closing in on a move to the Bernabeu – placing Navas's future in doubt.
