Ex-Real Madrid and Colombia midfielder Freddy Rincon is in hospital and in a critical condition after a car crash in Cali.

The 55-year-old is reported to have been driving a car with four occupants on Monday morning when it collided with a bus and left all five people in the car injured.

The bus driver also sustained injuries in the incident, and Rincon sustained a "traumatic" brain injury in the incident as he remains under the care of the Imbanaco Clinic.

"Freddy Eusebio Rincon arrived in hospital this morning with a traumatic brain injury. His condition is very critical," the hospital said in a statement.

Rincon registered one assist in 21 appearances for Real Madrid in the 1995-96 season and also had spells with Napoli, Santos, Cruzeiro, Corinthians and Palmeiras before hanging up his boots.

The midfielder amassed 17 goals from 85 matches in a Colombia shirt - featuring at the 1990, 1994 and 1998 World Cups - and he won the Club World Cup with Corinthians in 2000.
