Match Analysis: Real Madrid 4-1 Getafe

Real Madrid made it four wins from five La Liga matches with a 4-1 win over 10-man Getafe at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.

It was the away side who took the lead in the early stages when Angel Lafita's effort found the bottom corner via a Pepe deflection.

Madrid levelled with 19 minutes on the clock when Pepe converted from close range after Miguel Angel Moya had parried a Cristiano Ronaldo effort into the defender's path.

The home side completed the turnaround in the latter stages of the first period when Ronaldo converted from the spot after Michel had handled inside the box.

Isco added Madrid's third just before the hour mark, but Getafe ended the match with 10 men after Michel saw red late on for a challenge on Jese Rodriguez.

Madrid were not finished, however, as Ronaldo scored his second in stoppage time with a clever flick from close range.

Was the result fair?

Getafe might have taken the lead this evening, but they were second best from the moment that Madrid found their equaliser. In fairness to the away side, they continued to play their football in the latter stages, but they could not repel the continuous pressure. They did not deserve to lose by a comprehensive score, however, with 4-1 just about a fair reflection of events at the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid's performance

It was poor defending from the home side in the build-up to the opening goal, but they recovered impressively to take charge of proceedings. Losing Gareth Bale in the warm-up would have been a major disappointment, but his replacement Isco was stunning in the Madrid attack. They are still not quite right defensively, but their options in forward areas are simply frightening.

Getafe's performance

In truth, how Getafe fare this season will not depend on their results at places such as the Bernabeu. They started in positive fashion, but were guilty of retreating under constant pressure from the home side. Better teams than them will struggle against Madrid this season, but it might have been a different story if they had kept up their intensity from the early stages.

Isco: The Spaniard, who was signed from Malaga in the summer, scored his fifth goal of the season with a fine finish in the second period this evening. Aside from his goal, he caused all sorts of problems with his intelligent movement and passing in the final third. He is the reason that Madrid let Mesut Ozil depart at the beginning of September.

Biggest gaffe of the match

The decision to award Real Madrid a first-half penalty for a Michel handball could be considered harsh, but the midfielder was asking for trouble when he decided to move his arm away from his body. It gave the referee a decision to make, one that ultimately cost his team a goal.

Referee performance

David Fernandez had a fairly eventful first period as he was forced to issue a number of yellow cards, in addition to awarding Madrid a penalty, but he did get the majority of the decisions correct. He was not too popular with the home supporters in the latter stages, however, when he failed to award a free kick to Ronaldo when Getafe goalkeeper Moya had felled the Portuguese just outside the box.

Real Madrid: Madrid will attempt to record their fifth win of the season when they travel to Elche on Wednesday.

Getafe: Getafe return to action one day later with a home match against Celta Vigo on Thursday.
