Half-Time Report: Reading frustrate Queens Park Rangers

Alex McCarthy makes a number of good saves to ensure that his Reading side go into the break with Queens Park Rangers with the score at 0-0.

Queens Park Rangers have dominated the first half of their Championship encounter against Reading, who have clung on to go into the break at 0-0.

The away side rushed out of the blocks and created a series of chances in the first five minutes.

First, Junior Hoilett crashed a 25-yard shot against the bar, and then Charlie Austin was denied twice in quick succession by Alex McCarthy.

Matt Phillips, who set up Austin's earlier chances, himself went close in the 12th minute when the right winger cut inside onto his left foot and rifled a low shot inches wide of the near post.

Reading struggled to get a foothold in the opening quarter of the game, but had strong appeals for a penalty waved away when Danny Simpson seemed to bring down Jordan Obita with a clumsy challenge.

Pavel Pogrebnyak then poked the ball wide in the 27th minute as the home side began to forge out some openings.

Five minutes later, Danny Guthrie sent a free kick towards Chris Baird, whose header was pushed behind by Robert Green.

However, QPR continued to create openings as Austin tested McCarthy once more with a diving header before the goalkeeper was called into action again in the 41st minute to tip Hoilett's fierce, low drive around the post.
