Preview: Hibernian vs. Rangers - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Wednesday's Scottish Premiership clash between Hibernian and Rangers, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Rangers will be out for revenge on Wednesday night after Hibernian knocked them out of the Scottish League Cup earlier this month, while also hoping to maintain their gap at the top of the table.

Meanwhile, the hosts will be looking to gain another victory against the Gers and to potentially climb into the top five in the process.

Despite an own goal from Ryan Porteous in the first half, Hibernian were able to fight back into the game against St Johnstone at the weekend to gain all three points.

It was a hard-fought encounter, though, as they had to wait until the final 10 minutes of the game to open their account, with goals from Kevin Nisbet and Jamie Murphy securing the result.

This brought an end to the Hibees run of five games without a win in the league, which saw them suffer consecutive losses, starting with the last time they faced Rangers in the SPL.

When they competed in the reverse fixture it was the Gers who ran away with the win, despite the fact Hibernian took an early lead in a match that ended 2-1.

However, Jack Ross will be looking for his team to repeat their more recent Scottish League Cup semi-final performance, which saw Martin Boyle score a first-half hat-trick as the Hibees blew Rangers away with a 3-1 victory.

The table-toppers responded well to being knocked out of the cup, as they have gone on to earn consecutive wins both in Europe and the SPL.

Rangers defeated Sparta Prague 2-0 last week and they followed that up at the weekend with a 3-1 victory against Livingston due to goals from Scott Arfield, Joe Aribo and Fashion Sakala.

The result meant that Giovanni van Bronckhorst kickstarted his time as manager perfectly in the league, continuing where Steven Gerrard left off in order to keep the team at the top of the table.

With four points separating the Gers and Celtic, the new boss will be well aware of how important this particular fixture is in order to keep themselves in a comfortable position.

Right now Rangers are a team with confidence and they have shown no shortage of that in front of goal either, having scored 32 times already this season, which does mean they bring an immediate danger to this picture.

Team News

Porteous marked his return to the team with an own goal at the weekend, but he will be sure to retain his place in the squad, although Boyle and Christian Doidge remain suspended.

This opens up the opportunity for Jamie Gullan to stay in the squad, likely leading the line again alongside Nisbet, which proved to work well against St Johnstone.

Both Kemar Roofe and Leon Balogun were unavailable for Rangers at the weekend, forcing changes to the starting XI for van Bronckhorst and that is set to be the case again on Wednesday.

This could lead to him opting for the exact same team in order to build consistency and momentum within the group at the moment.

Hibernian possible starting lineup:
Macey; McGinn, Porteous, Hanlon; Doig, Newell, Doyle-Hayes, Cadden, Campbell; Nisbet, Gullan

Rangers possible starting lineup:
McGregor; Tavernier, Goldson, Bassey, Barisic; Aribo, Kamara; Arfield, Kent, Hagi, Morelos

We say: Hibernian 1-2 Rangers

Each team have managed to beat the other this season in a convincing fashion, which makes this a tough game to predict as both sides know how to get a result.

However, with the attacking qualities that Rangers possess, they should have enough to edge out their opponents here.
