Motherwell defender Steven Hammell: 'Playoffs bigger than a cup final'

Motherwell's Steven Hammell says that the upcoming playoff meeting with Rangers is the biggest game of his career.

Motherwell defender Steven Hammell has declared that his team's forthcoming playoff fixture against Rangers is bigger than a cup final.

The 33-year-old has spent the majority of his career at Fir Park, featuring in high-profile European matches and two cup finals, and he believes that their two-legged clash with the Gers overshadows the rest.

"It's probably even bigger than the cup final. The cup final doesn't determine what league you play in the next season," PA Sport quotes him as saying.

"There is so much riding on it, the future of the club and of staff at the club who I'm really friendly with as well. We have to make sure we put absolutely everything into it and make sure we come away with no regrets.

"I'm just as friendly with the staff in here as I am with the players, in terms of the office staff and cleaners and others. It has an effect on everyone."

Motherwell were condemned to the playoffs after finishing second from bottom of the Scottish Premiership, while Rangers have already defeated Queen of the South and Hibernian over two legs to reach this stage.
