Half-Time Report: Lee Wallace brace gives Rangers lead

Lee Wallace brace gives Rangers lead

Rangers have headed into half time with a 2-1 lead over St Mirren at Ibrox in the opening match of the Scottish Championship season.

The home side were ahead inside the opening five minutes as Lee Wallace collected a long ball into the box on a quick break before smashing it into the roof of the net from close range.

Rangers continued to look the more likely as James Tavernier created a couple of half-chances for a second, before Barrie McKay volleyed the ball just high of the crossbar.

Wallace doubled Mark Warburton's side's lead midway through the opening period when Jason Holt played the ball through, leaving the defender to slot it under the keeper.

It did not take the visitors long to pull one back though, as on-loan Celtic striker Paul McMullan picked new signing Cameron Howieson out with a through-ball, allowing him to tap it past Wes Foderingham.

Martyn Waghorn could have added a third for the hosts shortly before the break, but his long-range finish ended up just clearing the crossbar, while Mark Ridgers was needed to deny Rob Kiernan a couple of minutes later.
