Rio Ferdinand charged by Football Association for social media comments

Ferdinand charged by FA

Queens Park Rangers defender Rio Ferdinand has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association for comments that he recently made on social media.

The 35-year-old is alleged to have posted a comment via his Twitter account that "included a reference to gender".

It is understood that Ferdinand used a derogatory term to describe a woman as being promiscuous.

An official FA statement read: "It is alleged the comment posted on his twitter account was abusive and/or indecent and/or insulting and/or improper. It is further alleged that this breach is aggravated pursuant to FA Rule E3(2) as it included a reference to gender."

Ferdinand has until October 21 to respond to the charge.
