Mbappe breaks Lionel Messi Champions League record

Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe has become the youngest player to reach 40 Champions League goals, beating the record previously held by Lionel Messi.

The France international brought up the milestone on Wednesday when he scored a superb opening goal in PSG's 2-1 win over Juventus.

As a result of the strike, Mbappe became the youngest player to reach 40 Champions League goals at the age of 23 years and 316 days.

Messi previously held the record after scoring 40 goals in 24 years and 130 days, but his PSG teammate has subsequently beaten him by 179 days.

Mbappe is currently 19th on the all-time list for goals in Europe's premier club competition, but he is only eight goals adrift of the top 10.

The 23-year-old is still some way off reaching the tallies of Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who have scored 129 and 140 goals respectively.
