Cristiano Ronaldo determined to represent Portugal at Euro 2024

Cristiano Ronaldo determined to represent Portugal at Euro 2024

Cristiano Ronaldo is hopeful that he will be able to represent Portugal at Euro 2024, having played an important role in his national side qualifying for the competition.

Portugal booked their spot at next summer's tournament with three games to spare courtesy of their 3-2 success over Slovakia on Friday, with Ronaldo netting a brace in the Group J encounter.

The 38-year-old's international future was in doubt following the 2022 World Cup, but recently-appointed head coach Roberto Martinez has made him central to his plans.

Ronaldo has scored seven times during qualification for Euro 2024, and he has now struck 125 goals in 202 appearances for Portugal during a staggering international career.

The forward has also been in strong form for Al-Nassr this term, netting 11 goals and registering six assists in 11 appearances in all competitions.

Ronaldo is hopeful that he will avoid any issues this season as he bids to help his country enjoy a successful tournament in Germany.

"I hope I will be at Euro 2024 as there is still a lot of time left. I hope I won't have any problem or injury, I hope to play," he told reporters following the clash with Slovakia.

"I left Portugal early but it will always be my home. They support me in every stadium in Portugal. The Portuguese must be congratulated too for the reception they gave us and this qualification is also theirs.

"I will go to Bosnia but I don't know what the coach will decide. I'm always available to help the national team and I love doing that and whatever the coach wants to do. All 24 players are ready to help."

Portugal head coach Martinez was also full of praise for his players following the narrow success over Slovakia.

"Football is about suffering, about competing. I am delighted with the result, delighted with the amount of chances we created. When we analyse the game we saw a very good Portugal in the first half," he told UEFA.com.

"We wanted to carry on dominating, scoring goals, but we left the game a little bit too open. Slovakia had four shots on goal, we had 12. Overall we missed a lot of chances, but we deserved to win.

"It's good to look for fine tuning. We are in a position where players can show what they can do to be able to figure in the final squad for the Euros. We want to carry on the same standard."

Portugal will now take on Bosnia-Herzegovina in Group J on Monday evening, and there is expected to be a number of changes to the side that started against Slovakia.
