Ronaldo: 'Happiest moment in my career'

Cristiano Ronaldo has described winning Euro 2016 with Portugal as one of the "happiest moments" in his career.

The Real Madrid star won his first major trophy with the national team on Sunday night when Eder scored in extra time to seal a 1-0 victory over France in Paris.

It looked to be a disastrous night for Ronaldo as he broke down in tears when stretchered off with a knee injury in the 25th minute, but he ended up lifting the trophy with his teammates and manager Fernando Santos.

"I'm so happy, very happy," Ronaldo told reporters. "This was something I have wanted for a long time now, ever since [Euro] 2004 [defeat to Greece in the final]. I asked God to give me another chance. The Portuguese people deserve this, our players deserved this.

"We beat France and I'm delighted. This is one of the happiest moments in my career. I've always said I wanted to win a trophy with the national team and make history. And I did it. Thank God, things went well for us.

"I'd like to thank my teammates, our coach, our wider team in this Euro, the Portuguese people and all the ex-pats who were always with us, cheering for us from the beginning. This is a unique moment for me, for all the Portuguese people and it's unforgettable."

Portugal's win marks their first title win at a European Championships.
