Timbers come from behind to draw with conference leaders

Portland Timbers have earned a draw with San Jose Earthquakes thanks to a second-half comeback.

The away side started well and created several chances, but Robert Salinas and Marvin Chavez could only shoot wide from inside the box.

San Jose were awarded a penalty in the 24th minute after Donovan Ricketts brought down Steven Lenhart and their top scorer Chris Wondolowski made no mistake from the spot and put them 1-0 up.

It could have been 2-0 before half-time but a last-ditch tackle denied Wondolowski a second after he had beaten the offside trap.

After the break Portland started to create more chances, first through Darlington Nagbe and then Salvatore Zizzo.

They managed to get their equaliser midway through the second half when Bright Dike gathered the rebound to his own shot and scored at the second attempt.

There were few other chances until in the last minute, Ricketts made an important double save to keep the scores level.

San Jose remain top of the Western conference, while Portland are in eighth palce.
