Davis appointed Northern Ireland captain

Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill has named Glasgow Rangers midfielder Steven Davis as his captain.

Despite originally claiming that he would not appoint a permanent skipper until September, O'Neill has confirmed that Davis will continue in the position.

"Steven Davis is the captain and he will be the captain going forward," said the former Shamrock Rovers boss.

"I just thought at this stage of his career and with a new manager coming in it was maybe time and it would benefit the squad."

Davis has taken over the role from Aaron Hughes.
