Newcastle United have reportedly reached an agreement with Aston Villa to sign midfielder Jacob Ramsey.
The Magpies have experienced a frustrating summer transfer window having missed out on several top targets, while the future of Liverpool-linked Alexander Isak remains up in the air ahead of the new season.
Nevertheless, head coach Eddie Howe has strengthened his squad with the £55m signing of winger Anthony Elanga and £34.6m arrival of defender Malick Thiaw, while goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has joined on loan from Southampton.
Newcastle remain in the market for a new centre-forward amid uncertainty over the future of Isak and following the departure of Callum Wilson, but they have also been pushing to sign a new midfielder.
Ramsey has featured high on Newcastle list of targets this summer and talks with Aston Villa over a potential transfer were held earlier this week.
Now, journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that the Magpies have agreed a £40m deal to sign the 24-year-old, who ‘strongly' wanted to make the move to St James’ Park.
Ramsey set to undergo medical today ahead of Newcastle transfer
Romano adds that Ramsey has already agreed personal terms with Newcastle and he is currently travelling for his medical, which is set to take place today (Thursday), ahead of finalising his move to Howe’s side.
Newcastle are a man light in the midfield department and have targeted Ramsey after allowing boyhood hero Sean Longstaff join newly-promoted Leeds United for a reported £12m earlier this summer.
Villa, meanwhile, are believed to be willing to part ways with homegrown talent Ramsey as his £40m sale will help the club generate funds for new signings and comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.
Ramsey joined Aston Villa’s academy at the age of six and since making his senior debut in 2019, the Birmingham-born midfielder has made a total of 167 appearances across all competitions.
He was predominantly deployed as a left-sided midfielder under Unai Emery last season and chipped in with four goals and seven assists in 46 matches across the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and EFL Cup.
Newcastle travel to Villa Park to face Aston Villa in their opening Premier League match of the 2025-26 season on Saturday, but Ramsey is seemingly unlikely to finalise his transfer to the Magpies in time to feature.
