Newcastle United assistant coach Paul Simpson has urged fans not to put too much pressure on new signing Florian Thauvin.
The 22-year-old winger joined the Magpies from Marseille on Wednesday for around £12m.
Thauvin could make his debut against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday, but Simpson is not expecting the Frenchman to make an immediate impact.
"He's a really talented footballer, somebody who we hope will add to the group and improve the group," he told the club's official website.
"If he's involved at Old Trafford on Saturday, we're not expecting him to go and set the world alight straight away. But if we can get him involved, it will give the whole football club a boost, and the rest of the players because they want competition for places."
Thauvin scored 15 goals during a two-season spell with Marseille.
