Report: Steve McClaren wants Newcastle United job

Steve McClaren makes it clear to the Newcastle United hierarchy that he wants to become their next head coach, according to a report.

Steve McClaren has reportedly told Newcastle United that he wants to be their next head coach.

It has been reported that the former Derby County boss held talks with the club's hierarchy earlier this week.

The 54-year-old is said to be out of the country on holiday but is keeping up to date with events at St James' Park, and he will learn if he has got the job within the next week.

McClaren is out of work after parting company with Derby last Monday.

According to the Northern Echo, he is keen to get back into football as quickly as possible and is enthused about the possibility of taking over the Magpies.

The report adds that the former England boss has a good relationship with chief scout Graham Carr and is confident that they can form a strong working partnership.

It is thought that current boss John Carver would revert to a coaching role should McClaren get the job.

McClaren has also managed Middlesbrough, FC Twente, Wolfsburg and Nottingham Forest during his career.
