Newcastle contacted by coaches following McClaren snub?

Newcastle United have reportedly been contacted by managers with Champions League experience after Steve McClaren turned down the chance to take charge.

It is believed that the Derby County head coach turned down the opportunity to manage relegation-threatened Newcastle's final three games of the Premier League season after failing to guide the Rams to the Championship playoffs.

It appears that McClaren has committed his future to Derby for next season, which means that Newcastle will have to think again about their head coach role.

Current boss John Carver is expected to leave after overseeing a run of eight consecutive defeats in the Premier League.

According to The Chronicle, former Sevilla and Olympiacos coach Michel Gonzalez has expressed an interest in the role through an intermediary.

It is also understood that former Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri would be interested in the Newcastle job, even on a short-term basis.

Newcastle have stated that they will stand by Carver until the end of the season.
