John Carver wants Newcastle United to entertain

John Carver says that his Newcastle United team should look to entertain in the same mould as Kevin Keegan's side during the 1990s.

Newcastle United manager John Carver has told his side that they should look to play on the front foot, in the same mould as Kevin Keegan's revered side.

Carver was at Newcastle during Keegan's time in charge during the 1990s and was also assistant under Sir Bobby Robson, who was the last man to guide the North-East side into the Champions League.

The Magpies were criticised for their cautious play in their Tyne-Wear derby defeat at Sunderland on Sunday, but Carver says that he wants his side to be more entertaining.

"I've been involved in teams that express themselves. I was around with the Entertainers side, I was around with Sir Bobby's team, and they were two sides that actually played on the front foot," he told the Shields Gazette.

"I don't want to see us getting into the final third and then ending up with the goal back at our goalkeeper.

"I want us to be progressive, and I've never stopped them from being progressive, but [on Sunday] we weren't."

Newcastle travel to Liverpool on Monday.
