Alan Pardew sorry for "brilliant" Newcastle United fans

Alan Pardew admits to being disappointed that his Newcastle side could not give their "brilliant" fans more to cheer about in the 4-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

Alan Pardew has said that Newcastle United fans deserved more after watching their team lose 4-0 in Wednesday's quarter-final League Cup defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Magpies brought thousands of supporters with them on the 250-mile trip to London, but United were denied a spot in the semis after being soundly beaten at White Hart Lane.

Despite having a 12th man, Pardew says that Spurs' superior technical ability ultimately proved the difference between the sides.

"It was an unfortunate night for our fans because they were brilliant tonight," he told Sky Sports News.

"They gave us everything and we did commitment wise but Tottenham were better and their technical ability in tight areas was probably the difference."

Newcastle will now prepare for a Tyne-Wear derby against bitter rivals Sunderland on Sunday afternoon.
