Steve McClaren pleased by "professional" Newcastle United victory

Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren praises his team for their "professional" win over Northampton Town in round two of the League Cup.

Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren has praised his side for earning a "professional" win over Northampton Town in the League Cup.

The Magpies booked their place in the third round of the competition last night with a 4-1 triumph at St James' Park.

The victory was McClaren's first since arriving at the club earlier this summer.

"It was a relief," he is quoted as saying by The Chronicle. "This was always going to be a difficult game. We started well and should have had three or four before half time. We started well in the second half and overall it was a professional job. It's nice win and score a few goals."

Newcastle resume their Premier League campaign on Saturday when they host Arsenal.
