Nick Woltemade, Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes were on the scoresheet as Newcastle United recorded a 4-0 victory over Union SG in Wednesday night's Champions League fixture in Belgium.
The Magpies made the breakthrough when Woltemade flicked a shot from Sandro Tonali into the back of the net, before Gordon doubled the away side's advantage from the penalty spot in the closing stages of the first period.
Gordon netted his second penalty of the match in the second half, before Barnes completed the scoring late on, with Newcastle four-goal winners in their first away match of the 2025-26 Champions League.
SPORTS MOLE'S VERDICT
Newcastle needed this.
The late defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday would have been very difficult to take, while the Magpies needed to bounce back in the Champions League following a loss to Barcelona on matchday one.
Newcastle entered the match as the big favourites, but they were coming up against a Union SG outfit that were excellent against PSV Eindhoven in their first game in the league phase, recording a 3-1 win.
This was a proper, proper European away performance from Eddie Howe's side, who have announced themselves in the competition this season with an excellent display on the road.
Howe will now be hoping that this showing and result can be a springboard to truly ignite their season.
