Dick Advocaat to step down as Netherlands manager

Netherlands manager Dick Advocaat confirms that he will step down from his role following the team's upcoming friendlies against Scotland and Romania.

Netherlands manager Dick Advocaat has confirmed that he will step down from his role following his side's upcoming friendlies.

The 70-year-old was brought in for his third spell as the national team head coach earlier this year in an attempt to salvage Netherlands' World Cup qualification campaign, taking over from Danny Blind in May.

However, the former Sunderland boss was unable to turn the nation's fortunes around as they missed out on a second consecutive major tournament, and he has now confirmed that this month's matches against Scotland and Romania will be his last.

"These are my last two games, after this I'm stopping," he told reporters.

"I haven't said what I'm going to do therefore clubs do not know that I'm available or not. Let's get these two games out of the way and then we'll see what comes into my path. I'm doing the same as Louis van Gaal and never saying 'never'."

Netherlands finished second at the 2010 World Cup and third four years later, but will not feature in next summer's tournament.
