Roma hold off Napoli barrage in draw

Roma hold off Napoli to earn a point as the two sides play out a 0-0 draw in the Serie A.

Roma ended Napoli's five-game winning run at home as they held their hosts to a 0-0 draw at the Stadio San Paolo this evening.

Mohamed Salah was presented with the first opportunity of the match early on but the Chelsea loanee struck his shot across goal and out of play for a goal kick.

Despite the home side's dominance in the first half, their best opportunities fell to Lorenzo Insigne and the Italian could not get either of his efforts on target as he tried to squeeze the ball home from difficult angles.

The home side had a great chance at the start of the second half as Faouzi Ghoulam sent in a cross from the left but Gonzalo Higuain could not get his foot to the ball for a simple tap-in.

Marek Hamsik was next to try to break the deadlock after Higuain slipped the Slovakian through on goal but the midfielder dragged his shot wide of Wojciech Szczesny's goal.

Insigne put in a tempting cross with 12 minutes to go and as Higuain waited to tuck the ball home, Kostas Manolas dived at the ball to head it away from the Argentine's foot.

Roma thought they had stole all three points as Anthony Rudiger's cross was headed home by Daniele De Rossi, but the goal was ruled out as the German's ball in had curled out of play.

Hamsik had another opportunity with five minutes to go but again, the Napoli player was denied by the Arsenal loanee in the away team's goal.

Napoli almost won it at the death after Insigne forced a save from Szczesny, who palmed it out to Omar El Kaddouri, but the substitute could not find the back of the net.

The point moves Napoli into second but they are four points off Inter Milan, while Roma remain fourth in the Serie A table.
