Motherwell beat league leaders Celtic while Inverness are held by Dundee United on a busy night of Scottish Premier League action.

Motherwell claimed a shock 2-1 victory over league leaders Celtic this evening on a busy night of Scottish Premier League action.

Chris Humphrey's early strike was cancelled out by Georgios Samaras, but Michael Higdon slammed home a late volley to put Motherwell back ahead.

Celtic were left to rue Neil Lennon's decision to rest key players as Stuart McCall's men held on for a win that moves them up to second in the table.

Elsewhere new Dundee boss John Brown was denied a first win as interim manager by St Johnstone in an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Dundee had Declan Gallacher sent off for a late challenge but equalised in stoppage time when substitute Mark Stewart smashed in from close range.

St Mirren got the better of Hearts in a basement battle at Tynecastle, thanks to goals from Paul McGowan and Graham Carey.

Leigh Griffiths was on target deep into injury time as Hibernian shared four goals with Kilmarnock in a mid-table battle at Easter Road.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle slipped to third after they were held to frustrating 0-0 draw by Dundee United.

Results in full: Dundee 2-2 St Johnstone, Hibernian 2-2 Kilmarnock, Inverness CT 0-0 Kilmarnock, Motherwell 2-1 Celtic, St Mirren 2-0 Hearts
