Millwall strike late winner against Plymouth Argyle to reach EFL Cup third round

Millwall hit late to break Plymouth hearts

Millwall have reached the third round of the EFL Cup thanks to a last-gasp 3-2 win over Plymouth Argyle in Wednesday night's second-round encounter at The Den.

League One's bottom side took the lead four minutes before the break through Jamie Ness, who deftly headed home from Joel Grant's corner kick.

However, Millwall drew level just after the hour when Ryan Edwards pulled down Tom Elliott while through on goal for a penalty, which captain Shaun Williams slotted to his left.

Plymouth were soon back in front again courtesy of an impressive goal by Freddie Ladapo, who embarked on a solo run and weaved past numerous opponents before calmly stroking into the far corner.

Just six minutes from time, the Lions pulled themselves back into the game for a second time as Lee Gregory powered a header home after Jiri Skalak was left free on the right-hand side of the box.

The game seemed to be heading for penalties, but in the 89th minute Aiden O'Brien sent the home crowd berserk by poking past Matthew Macey following a left-wing cross.
