Result: Middlesbrough 1-0 Watford

Middlesbrough have gone third in the Championship table with a 1-0 win at home to Watford.

The hosts could have taken the lead after six minutes, but striker Marvin Emnes put his shot wide from close range.

In a half which was largely dominated by Tony Mowbray's side, they went ahead just before the break when Scott McDonald fired into the bottom corner from inside the area. However, replays showed that the forward was offside.

The Hornets peppered the goal with a succession of corners in the second half, but the Boro defence stood firm.

Faris Haroun could have doubled his side's lead with 20 minutes to go but the Belgian smashed his shot over from six yards out.

Bartholomew Ogbechi was put in by Haroun in injury time, but the Nigerian's shot was blocked.
