Louis van Gaal: 'I will only sign top quality in January'

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal admits that he will only spend money in the January transfer window if the players are of top quality.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed that he will only sign a player this month if they will definitely improve the quality of his squad.

United have been linked with several players, including Mats Hummels and Nathaniel Clyne, and have already sealed a move for free-agent keeper Victor Valdes.

However, the Dutchman is adamant that he will not be pressed into spending money this January, unless a player of the highest talent becomes available.

He told reporters: "When I cannot improve my selection, then I wait. And then I maybe have to wait a year more. Maybe you think that there are so many fantastic players, but it is not like that.

"However, I don't [necessarily] prefer to wait until the summer when I can improve my selections. That I have showed with Valdes.

"When we can buy a player who can improve my selection, the club shall buy. Money is not interesting. It is always quality of the players in comparison with the other players that I have. I have to compare. I have to decide. Money doesn't play any role."

Van Gaal has indicated that the arrival of Valdes will not put David de Gea's place as first-choice keeper under threat.
