Manchester United should "break the bank" to bring Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane to Old Trafford, according to pundit Paul Merson.

Manchester United should "break the bank" to bring Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane to Old Trafford in next summer's transfer window, according to former Arsenal forward Paul Merson.

Following United's 1-1 draw with Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, Roy Keane urged his former club to make an attempt to sign Kane amid Tottenham's struggles.

Merson has now had his say on the transfer claim, and the pundit has insisted that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side should move for the England captain even if he costs them £120m.

"Manchester United need to go and break the bank because they need a goalscorer. For me, he's one of the best around and he's proven," Merson told Sky Sports News.

"Manchester United don't need to go out and buy someone who might be good in two years. They need someone to come in and hit the ground running with 25 goals next season.

"He'd be moving to the biggest club in the world. Even if they spent £120m, you know you're buying goals and you wouldn't be sweating. He'll get you 25 goals a season without you sweating. Can you imagine a top player like that not winning a tap in his career?"

Kane has scored nine times in 12 appearances for Mauricio Pochettino's side this season, but the 26-year-old's future is currently being called into question with Spurs struggling to challenge for major trophies.
