Manchester United could drop their interest in Tottenham Hotspur centre-forward Harry Kane, according to a report.

Manchester United are reportedly considering dropping their interest in Tottenham Hotspur centre-forward Harry Kane, with the club not prepared to over-pay for the England captain.

The 29-year-old has again been in excellent form for Spurs during the 2022-23 campaign, scoring 28 goals and registering five assists in 46 appearances in all competitions for the club.

Kane will again end the season without a trophy, though, and Tottenham are also set to miss out on a spot in the 2023-24 Champions League, with the team currently down in sixth position in the Premier League table, six points behind fourth-placed Man United, who have a game in hand.

The Englishman only has a contract with Spurs until the summer of 2024, leading to suggestions that he could be sold during the upcoming market.

However, Kane has hinted that he is open to staying with his North London club for another season in a bid to help them end their long trophy drought.

There have also been suggestions that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy will refuse to sell the Englishman to a Premier League rival this summer under any circumstances.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are long-term admirers of Kane, but neither are serious contenders for his signature this summer, while Bayern Munich have seemingly been priced out of a move.

The main interest is currently arriving from Man United, but according to The Sun, the 20-time English champions are considering dropping their interest before the transfer window has even opened.

The report claims that Levy would want in excess of £100m for Kane if the player signalled a desire to leave, and the Red Devils are wary of being pulled into a long transfer saga due to their need for a new centre-forward.

Napoli's Victor Osimhen and Eintracht Frankfurt's Randal Kolo Muani have also been linked with switches to Old Trafford during this summer's transfer window.

However, neither Napoli nor Frankfurt are believed to be open to selling their star players in the upcoming market, which could force Man United to look elsewhere.

Atalanta BC's Rasmus Hojlund and Ajax's Mohammed Kudus have also been linked with moves to Old Trafford, while a recent report claimed that the club were lining up a record bid for Benfica's Goncalo Ramos.

At this stage, Man United have allegedly not made any firm plans for the summer window, with head coach Erik ten Hag unsure of the size of his budget due to the uncertainty surrounding the ownership situation.

The Red Devils are also yet to confirm a top-four spot in the Premier League table, currently sitting fourth, one point clear of fifth-placed Liverpool with a game in hand.
