Dean Henderson wants to leave Manchester United on a permanent basis this summer as he does not want to be a number two goalkeeper, according to a report.

Dean Henderson is reportedly keen to leave Manchester United on a permanent basis this summer.

The 26-year-old became Man United's number one for a spell during the 2020-21 campaign, featuring on 26 occasions for the club, as he appeared to take the gloves away from David de Gea on a permanent basis.

However, Henderson was restricted to just three appearances for the 20-time English champions last term, which led to him leaving over the summer to join Nottingham Forest on loan.

The England international has played 20 times for the Reds this season, but he has not featured for Steve Cooper's side since the middle of January due to injury.

As it stands, Henderson will return to his parent club this summer, and it will be up to Red Devils head coach Erik ten Hag to decide whether he wants to keep hold of the Englishman for the 2023-24 campaign.

However, there does not appear to be an obvious route back into the first team at Old Trafford, with De Gea expected to sign a new contract in the near future.

Man United continue to be linked with a number of goalkeepers, meanwhile, as current number two Tom Heaton's deal is due to expire at the end of June.

Meanwhile, Jack Butland is only on loan at the club from Crystal Palace, and the experienced stopper is unlikely to be signed on a permanent basis.

According to Football Insider, Henderson is not prepared to play second fiddle to De Gea again next season and will therefore inform the club that he wants to leave on a permanent basis in the upcoming market.

Henderson allegedly believes that he will only be able to force his way back into the England squad ahead of Euro 2024 if he is playing regular football next season.

Forest are thought to be open to signing the goalkeeper on a permanent basis, but any move is likely to depend on whether Cooper's side are able to avoid relegation to the Championship.

Henderson is currently in his sixth separate loan spell, impressing for Sheffield United before being brought into the Man United first team for the 2020-21 campaign.

The goalkeeper could allegedly miss the remainder of the season, having suffered a setback in his recovery from a thigh problem.

Keylor Navas is therefore expected to finish the campaign as Forest's number one, with the Costa Rica international joining the club on loan during the January transfer window.
