Manchester United have reportedly failed with an audacious attempt to loan an important Aston Villa player.
The Red Devils have enjoyed a productive summer transfer window to date having acquired the services of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
However, it remains clear that Ruben Amorim wants to add several more fresh faces to his squad before their Premier League opener against Arsenal on August 18.
In recent weeks, Man United have been linked with goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and forward Ollie Watkins, both of whom could bolster Villa's position with the relevant financial regulations if they were sold.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, United have made a speculative attempt to secure a loan deal for Martinez.
Man United fail with Martinez loan bid
Romano says that Villa have turned down the terms that were on offer to send the World Cup winner to Old Trafford on a temporary basis.
Ever since Martinez appeared to wave goodbye to home supporters after the final Villa Park fixture of 2024-25, there has been speculation regarding his future.
Despite links to Atletico Madrid and the Saudi Pro League, there has been little movement over his future and it seems increasingly likely that he will stay put unless Villa receive an offer that they cannot turn down.
Martinez is yet to feature in a Villa squad during pre-season, new addition Marco Bizot having had the opportunity to stake his claim for the number one spot.
What does bid say about Man United?
Man United officials would have expected a firm no from Villa when they enquired about a loan deal for an Argentina international.
Nevertheless, it suggests that they are not willing to spend big on a new goalkeeper unless they are able to find a buyer for Andre Onana.
As it stands, Onana seems likely to start the new season as number one, albeit a scenario remaining like the one that Villa have with Martinez.
With Martinez signing a contract extension to 2029 less than 12 months ago, it would take a big-money proposal for Villa to jump at the chance of a sale.
