Three free agents Manchester United could sign to boost their squad

Sports Mole looks at three free agents that Manchester United could still potentially sign.

Manchester United are believed to be interested in signing Colombian full-back Santiago Arias on a free transfer in order to boost their squad.

The summer transfer window has now closed, but clubs are still able to bring in free agents, and there are still a number of talented players without teams.

Man United were busy over the summer, bringing in six players in total, but it is understood that Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag wanted to do more business before the window shut.

With that in mind, Sports Mole picks out three players who could potentially arrive at Old Trafford in order to boost their squad for the 2022-23 campaign.

Santiago Arias (defender)

Santiago Arias has been without a club since leaving Atletico Madrid on a free transfer in June, making 51 appearances for the capital giants before his departure.

According to journalist Johnson Saenz, the 20-time English champions are considering bringing the Colombia international to the club as competition at right-back.

Arias has represented his country on 54 occasions, playing in two World Cups, while he has also turned out for Sporting Lisbon, PSV Eindhoven, Bayer Leverkusen and Granada.

Diogo Dalot is Man United's first-choice right-back, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka is not thought to be in the plans of Ten Hag, which leaves the club short of options on the right side of their defence.

Arias is not a long-term option for the Red Devils, nor would he be a first-team regular, but his arrival on a free transfer could be a smart piece of business considering his experience and pedigree.

Jason Denayer (defender)

Jason Denayer left Lyon on a free transfer at the end of June, and he is still without a club despite being linked with a number of sides in recent weeks.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are believed to be interested in the 27-year-old, who is capable of playing as a right-back or a central defender, making him an attractive proposition.

Denayer - capped on 35 occasions by Belgium - was a regular during his time at Lyon, making 139 appearances, contributing eight goals and two assists in the process.

The defender started his professional career at Manchester City but did not make a first-team appearance for the club, spending time out on loan with Celtic, Galatasaray and Sunderland.

Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe are unlikely to play for Man United this season, so the club only have four first-team options at centre-back - Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof - so Denayer's arrival would also boost the team's options in the middle of the defence.

Dan-Axel Zagadou (defender)

Dan-Axel Zagadou is another player to be linked with a string of clubs in recent weeks, but the centre-back has still not committed to a new team.

The 23-year-old is available on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract at Borussia Dortmund, who he represented on 91 occasions in all competitions.

Zagadou played 67 times in the Bundesliga and 14 times in the Champions League during his time at BVB, but he struggled with a number of injury problems, which contributed to his release.

The former France Under-21s international started his career at Paris Saint-Germain, and he has picked up a lot of experience despite his relatively short career thus far.

Standing at 6ft 5in, Zagadou certainly boasts the frame to play in the Premier League, and he could be a valuable addition to the team's current list of central defenders.
