Chris Smalling focused on Manchester United

Smalling puts Euros, Olympics on backburner

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has admitted that the possibility of playing for England in the European Championships and London Olympics is not a priority.

The 21-year-old, who is becoming a regular addition to the Red Devils' first team, is in contention to represent his country in both tournaments next year, but insists that he needs to focus on progressing at Old Trafford.

"I have to say that England is not my first target at the moment and neither are the Olympics," Smalling told the Manchester Evening News.

"United is what I am thinking about. But towards the end of the season I will be looking towards that and hopefully I might get into the England squad. Obviously I'd love to go there.

"Whether it's the Euros, the Olympics, or both - you would like to be involved because these opportunities do not come around too often."

The Premier League champions travel to Merseyside this Saturday to face Everton.
