Wayne Rooney's Manchester derby goals

Sports Mole looks back over each of the 11 goals that Wayne Rooney has scored in the Manchester derby.

No player has scored more goals in a Manchester derby than Wayne Rooney.

From his 20 appearances against Manchester City, the Manchester United striker has found the back of the net on 11 occasions.

He has an opportunity to extend that tally further when City visit Old Trafford this evening and ahead of that clash, Sports Mole has looked back on each of his goals in this fixture.

1. Man City 0-2 Man United, February 2005

In what was his first start for United against their rivals, Rooney darted towards the near post to meet Gary Neville's low cross. His contact with the ball was not the cleanest, but his effort was helped beyond the reach of David James courtesy of a deflection off home defender Richard Dunne.

2. Man United 3-1 Man City, December 2006

With just five minutes on the clock, the City defence failed to clear Cristiano Ronaldo's cross from the right, leaving an unmarked Rooney with just visiting goalkeeper Nicky Weaver to beat. He did just that with an instant finish that deceived Weaver before he could react.

3. Man City 0-1 Man United, November 2008

Rooney's 100th club goal proved to be the winner at the City of Manchester Stadium. Joe Hart failed to hold Michael Carrick's powerful shot and Rooney was on hand to turn in the rebound from close range just before the break.

4. Man United 4-3 Man City, September 2009

A seven-goal derby encounter that is best remembered for Michael Owen's stoppage-time intervention took just two minutes to hot up. Patrice Evra picked out Rooney inside the area and having shrugged off the attention of two City defenders, he then slotted the ball underneath Shay Given.

5. Man United 3-1 Man City, January 2010

Former United striker Carlos Tevez appeared to have sent this League Cup semi-final into extra time, but in the last minute, Rooney guided an inswinging Ryan Giggs cross out of the reach of Given to send United into the final, where they defeated Aston Villa.

6. Man United 2-1 Man City, February 2011

Up until his exploits at Upton Park at the weekend, this was arguably Rooney's most memorable goal in a United shirt. The match was level at one goal apiece when Rooney readjusted his body just in time to send an acrobatic volley into the top corner of Hart's net.

7. Man City 2-3 Man United, January 2012

The Red Devils ran riot during the first half at the Etihad Stadium, with Rooney scoring two of their three goals. His first was a looping header from an Antonio Valencia cross that went in via the crossbar, while his second was scored after Costel Pantilimon had saved his initial penalty following a foul on Danny Welbeck.

8. Man City 2-3 Man United, December 2012

Robin van Persie stole the headlines with his late winner, but the foundations for United's win were laid by Rooney. He broke the deadlock in the 16th minute following a swift counter-attack which involved Ashley Young. Then, 12 minutes later, he swept in Rafael da Silva's low cross from the right flank.

9. Man City 4-1 Man United, September 2013

David Moyes's men were already well beaten by the time that Rooney scored a consolation in the closing stages, but it was still a goal of real quality. He struck his free kick from 25 yards out that flew into the top corner of Hart's net.
