Wayne Rooney: 'Three points vital for Manchester United'

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney believes that three points are more important than the performance in the opening game of the Premier League season.

Wayne Rooney has said that starting the Premier League season with a win is the most important thing for Manchester United.

Louis van Gaal's side, who finished fourth in the table last season, begin the campaign with a home match against Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow lunchtime.

The club's captain told MUTV: "Tottenham are a team I have done well against over the years and scored goals. I hope that can continue on Saturday but the most important thing is getting three points. For me, I'd say the three points are more important than the performance on Saturday. We want to perform well but it's vital that we get three points."

United were beaten by Swansea City on the opening day of the season last year.
