Wayne Rooney: 'It would be an honour to captain England'

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney admits that it would be "an honour" to be made England captain in the future.

Striker Wayne Rooney has admitted that he would be delighted to be named captain of Manchester United or England in the future.

Rooney is reportedly under consideration to replace Old Trafford skipper Nemanja Vidic and England leader Steven Gerrard next season, and despite attempting to play down the possibility of being handed extra responsibility, the attacker has revealed that he would grab either opportunity with both hands.

The 28-year-old told Inside United: "I've captained a few times for United and if the manager wants me to be captain, I'd have no problem with that. I'd grab it with both hands.

"It'd be a great honour to captain my country but, again, it's the manager's call and I'm sure that he'll have a few contenders. You don't know what Steven is going to do in the summer, only he knows."

Rooney is currently competing in his 10th campaign at Old Trafford, while he has made 89 appearances for his country since making his debut in 2003.
