Jamie Redknapp blasts Louis van Gaal's treatment of Wayne Rooney

Jamie Redknapp rubbishes Louis van Gaal's suggestions that Manchester United need a 20-goal-a-season striker following Wayne Rooney's performance at the weekend.

Jamie Redknapp has rubbished Louis van Gaal's suggestions that Manchester United do not have a striker who can score 20 goals a season following Wayne Rooney's performance at the weekend.

The England captain scored twice to seal a 2-0 victory over Sunderland at Old Trafford.

The brace comes after Van Gaal, who has recently been playing Rooney in midfield, suggested to reporters that the club needs a prolific goalscorer.

Redknapp wrote in his Daily Mail column: "When Louis van Gaal said he needed a 20-goal-a-season striker, I almost laughed. Manchester United have spent huge money and now he is saying Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie or Radamel Falcao can't score 20 goals? Do me a favour.

"Rooney issued the perfect response on Saturday. I still don't know why Van Gaal insists on playing him in midfield. In his career Rooney averages 18.8 goals a season. At United that figure is 20.6 goals. Still not good enough, Louis?"

United are currently fourth in the Premier League table, two points above arch rivals Liverpool.
