Premier League transfer spending reaches record £800m

Premier League summer spending reaches a record £800m following yesterday's final day of transfer business.

A new record has been reached in the Premier League after summer spending on transfers reached around £842m yesterday.

The eye-watering figure came to light on deadline day of the window as clubs scrambled to conclude their business before the next transfer market opens in January.

Manchester United were the league's biggest spenders having parted with £157.7m on six signings, one of whom is Angel di Maria, who caused United to break the British record by handing over £59.7m to Real Madrid.

A surprise addition to Louis van Gaal's team was made on the final day of the window in the form of Radamel Falcao, who has joined United on loan from Monaco.

According to Goal.com, Deloitte's Sports Business Group have revealed that spending in the summer window has increased by almost £200m from last year's £630m total.

Liverpool also spent over £100m on nine new recruits, who include midfielder Adam Lallana and Italy international Mario Balotelli.
