Phil Jones talks up Rio Ferdinand influence

Phil Jones believes that "top-class" Rio Ferdinand was the best defensive player in the world during his playing days, which helped shape his own career at Old Trafford.

Manchester United and England defender Phil Jones has revealed how Rio Ferdinand has had a huge influence on his career.

The 23-year-old has been used in a number of defensive positions since joining the Red Devils in a deal worth around £17m four years ago.

Some impressive mature showings from Jones during his early days at Old Trafford led to former boss Sir Alex Ferguson suggesting that the Englishman could potentially become United's "best ever player".

Jones has now given an insight into his playing days at the club so far, affording particular praise to former central-defensive partner Ferdinand.

Speaking to United's official website, he said: "Rio just talked sense. Every time I spoke to him he just talked sense, whether it was about me, about the team or just things in general life. Everything he said I listened to and I understood everything about what he was trying to say.

"He explained everything. He was a great go-to man when you needed some help with things. His leadership qualities, his calmness and his overall game were top class. When he was at his peak he was one of the best in the world, if not the best. Playing alongside him was great. The thing I remember most is that he never shut up!

"As a young kid growing up and trying to establish yourself in the team, you couldn't ask for anyone better to learn from. He always helped you and talked to you about where you needed to be. He made sure he made life easier for you out on the pitch. It's something that fans and maybe other players didn't see, but I saw it and it was a big help."

Ferdinand left United in 2014 after 12 trophy-laden seasons at the club.
