Gary Neville: 'It wasn't a good Manchester United performance'

Gary Neville believes that Manchester United did not put in a good display against Southampton, despite taking all three points from the Premier League match.

Gary Neville believes that Manchester United put in an extremely poor display in their win over Southampton at St Mary's Stadium.

The Red Devils were on the back foot for the majority of the match, but two strikes from Robin van Persie were enough to hand them the three points to move Louis van Gaal's side to third in the Premier League.

Neville told Sky Sports News: "They will be absolutely delighted to see themselves third in the league. It was so bad at times. It got slightly better in the second half, but it wasn't a good United performance even if it was a great result.

"They'll think that's all that matters but they are going to have to step it up. They've got away with murder tonight really with that performance. Southampton weren't very good at times and looked like a team shot on confidence.

"All in all United will be happy with the result, but they're going to have to play better than that."

United face Liverpool in their next top-flight outing on Sunday at Old Trafford.
