Henrikh Mkhitaryan 'surprised' Manchester United were able to sign Nemanja Matic

Henrikh Mkhitaryan admits that he is surprised that Manchester United were able to snatch Nemanja Matic from Chelsea.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has admitted that he was quite shocked by Manchester United's ability to get a deal done to sign Nemanja Matic from Chelsea.

The midfielder recently moved to Old Trafford in a reported £40m deal, three years after he returned to Chelsea for a second spell.

According to Sky Sports News, when asked if he is surprised that his club were able to take Matic from the Blues, Mkhitaryan said: "Actually, I am, but at the same time I am very happy that we have got him."

The Serbian put in a man-of-the-match display on Sunday during United's Premier League opening 4-0 win over West Ham United at Old Trafford.

Fellow new signing Romelu Lukaku also impressed by scoring twice, but there was no place in the squad for Victor Lindelof, who is expected to be eased into proceedings.

"It was not only Matic. I want to mention as well the other two new signings, Lindelof and Lukaku. They are very good players. They are, I think, Manchester United players," Mkhitaryan added.

"Matic does a big job on the pitch. He tries to recover all the balls. He defensively does a big job. Lukaku scored his goals and Lindelof is still going to have time to show himself. So I want to say all the players are good signings and they are going to help us a lot."

Next up for United is a trip to Wales to take on Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium this Saturday.
