Erik ten Hag says that Phil Jones has not taken part in a single training session since his arrival as Manchester United head coach.

Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag has revealed that Phil Jones has not taken part in a single training session since his arrival last May.

Jones was out between January 2020 and January 2022 due to a serious knee injury, but he did manage to make five appearances for the Red Devils last season, including four outings in the Premier League.

The 30-year-old has not featured in a single matchday squad for Man United this term, and he only has a contract with the club until the end of June.

Ten Hag has said that the centre-back has been unable to train with the first team during the 2022-23 campaign, although it is unclear whether that is due to his chronic knee issues.

Man United's head coach has said that a decision on a possible extension for Jones has not been made, but it is thought to be almost certain that the defender will leave on a free transfer at the end of June.

"There has not been a decision taken about that, for the summer. The whole season he has been injured," Ten Hag told reporters during a press conference on Friday afternoon.

"I can't say. What I can say is he is not available for training and hasn't been since the first day of training this season. Then, the opportunity that you recover quickly also goes."

Jones has been with Man United since 2011, featuring on 229 occasions for the club in all competitions, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, Community Shield and Europa League in the process.

DC United were among the clubs to be linked with the Englishman over the summer, but the transfer window closed with him still at Old Trafford, and he will also stay with the club this month.

Jones's best season at Old Trafford in terms of productivity came in 2011-12, when he featured on 41 occasions in all competitions, but he has found it difficult over the last few years.

The centre-back has only played six times in the Premier League since the end of the 2018-19 campaign, and he is expected to end his long association with the club at the end of June.

Axel Tuanzebe and Tom Heaton will also see their deals expire this summer, and both players are likely to depart in search of pastures new.

Man United will also have decisions to make on Jack Butland and Wout Weghorst this summer, with the duo currently on loan at the club from Crystal Palace and Burnley respectively.
