Bryan Mbeumo's Man United debut date revealed after absence against West Ham

Man United boss Amorim reveals Mbeumo's debut date after absence against West Ham

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has revealed that Bryan Mbeumo is in line to make his debut for the Red Devils in their friendly contest with Everton on August 3.

Mbeumo made a £71m move to Man United from Brentford at the start of last week before travelling with his new teammates to the United States for their pre-season tour.

The Cameroon international was not in the squad for the clash with West Ham United on Saturday night, with Amorim revealing that the attacker "is starting slowly", having only just arrived at OId Trafford.

Mbeumo will also be missing against Bournemouth on July 30, but the 25-year-old is in line to be involved against Everton on August 3, with that match bringing the club's pre-season tour to a close.

"Bryan is starting slowly," Amorim told MUTV. "He is not going to play in the next one. We hope to have Bryan in the last game [in the United States]. He's training now, so we'll see."

In his absence, Man United recorded a 2-1 win over West Ham, with Bruno Fernandes scoring twice for the 20-time English champions, including a goal from the penalty spot.

"It was completely different to last season. We didn't suffer, we scored and that can help you play better. We had some possession, we defend well, one against one, we press high, especially the goal kicks and it helped us to win the ball sometimes," Amorim told reporters following the clash.

"I think we need to have more long possession when we win the ball, so that we are near the box and try to find the small spaces. We can handle the ball and work the ball a little bit more.

"Until the West Ham goal, we were controlling the game, with more opportunities, and then we suffered a little bit, we changed all the team with a lot of young kids. But it was a good test to improve the team."

Amorim addresses Fernandes's position in Man United side

There have been suggestions that Fernandes will play deeper for Man United this season, but he excelled in the number 10 spot against West Ham, and Amorim was quizzed on his captain after the match.

"It was so clear last season, you can see it with the goals and assists. But it's not just that. I think now he has more players, I feel, to help him to lead the group and that is a good thing. He is our leader and really important, not just on the field, but off the field. He leads by example," said Amorim.

"He works really hard, is always available and, sometimes, he plays with pain. Sometimes, the problem is he gets frustrated and loses a little bit of focus of his job. Sometimes, he wants to help the team-mates so much, it is not the best thing to do. They have to do their job and Bruno has, for example, to wait for the ball.

"He has a function or a position for every game. It's impossible to play all the positions. Last year, I felt sometimes I pushed him back to have more possession in the build-up and we miss Bruno near the box.

"With different characteristics from Bryan [Mbeumo] and Matheus Cunha, and I really like Kobbie Mainoo's game, he will have more help this season. Bruno runs a lot, maybe in the sprints, he is a different player but he runs a lot. He has a lot of endurance and he is smart. It's not about that. Physicality with Bruno is not a concern, playing him deep or as an attacking midfielder."

Fernandes was Man United's standout player during a difficult 2024-25 campaign, scoring 19 goals and registering 19 assists in 57 appearances in all competitions.
