Ferguson backs Rooney to break scoring record

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes that Wayne Rooney can become the club's all-time leading goalscorer.

Sir Bobby Charlton currently holds the record at Old Trafford, having scored 247 times in over 700 apparances for the club.

In contrast, Rooney sits ninth in the list of top marksmen with 156 goals.

When asked if the England forward could break Charlton's record, Ferguson told Inside United: "I do. He is only 25 years of age, so you'd think he has at least another five years in him at the very top level.

"The opportunity is there and time is on his side. He's raced out of the blocks already this season and I hope he could get up to around the 30 mark."

The Premier League champions face a trip to Anfield to take on Liverpool after the international break.
