Memphis Depay: 'Louis van Gaal convinced me to reject Paris Saint-Germain'

Depay: 'Van Gaal convinced me to snub PSG'

New Manchester United signing Memphis Depay has revealed that he only turned down a move to Paris Saint-Germain once Louis van Gaal got in touch.

Last week, United agreed a deal, thought to be in the region of £25m, with PSV Eindhoven for the Dutch international.

The 21-year-old has confirmed that he was on the verge of signing for the Ligue 1 giants, but Van Gaal moved quickly to prevent that from happening.

"I was really close to a transfer to Paris Saint-Germain," Depay told Sky Sports News. "But in the last moment, I know Man U was always interested, but not concrete, and in the last moment they called my manager and, of course, I spoke with the trainer Louis van Gaal.

"So yeah, it was a difficult situation, let me say that, but after I spoke with the trainer Louis van Gaal, I say to myself I want to go to Manchester."

Depay scored his 22nd Eredivisie goal of the season in his penultimate game for PSV on Sunday.
