Ole Gunnar Solskjaer compares Marcus Rashford free kick to Cristiano Ronaldo

Solskjaer compares Rashford free kick to Ronaldo

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has compared Marcus Rashford's incredible free kick during Manchester United's 2-1 win over Chelsea to that of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 21-year-old had opened the scoring through a penalty before Michy Batshuayi equalised for the home side.

With 17 minutes left, Rashford hit a free kick from around 35 yards with a textbook 'knuckleball' technique, getting under the ball with the top of his foot, to create a swerve and dip that fizzed past Willy Caballero in emphatic fashion.

Reflecting on the strike after the game, Solskjaer told MUTV: "It's very Cristiano-like, isn't it? The boy has got nerves of steel, takes a penalty, no problem. Steps up and hits the ball like he does and wins us the game, fantastic.

"I think he works too much on [free kicks]. I've always tried to get Marcus scoring the simple tap-ins and be inside the box, he always scores great goals Marcus, he practises and today he got his reward.

"Marcus has that strike in him. I've seen him in training so many times and it's got to be hitting the target soon, you think, because he's had a few efforts and finally it goes in."

Rashford has previously spoken of how his primary idol growing up was Ronaldo and that his free kick style is based on the 34-year-old's recognisable technique.

The Englishman scored a free kick from even further out with the same technique during a 5-1 win over Cardiff City in December 2018 - Solskjaer's first game as United caretaker manager.
