Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney fit for Arsenal showdown?

Wayne Rooney is reportedly expected to be fit for Manchester United's clash against Arsenal, despite leaving the England camp early with a knee injury.

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is expected to be fit for Saturday lunchtime's Premier League clash against Arsenal, despite leaving the England camp early with a knee injury.

The 31-year-old captained his country in last Friday's 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Scotland at Wembley, but withdrew from the squad three days later with an injury.

Questions arose over Rooney's departure after a national newspaper published a photo of the forward appearing bleary-eyed while allegedly drinking at a hotel wedding party over the weekend, but England interim boss Gareth Southgate stressed that the footballer's withdrawal was purely down to an injury.

Rooney's camp have also defended the England captain's post-match celebrations, accusing fans of taking "advantage" of the footballer's "good nature" in posing for photographs.

Since leaving the England setup on Monday, Rooney has been having treatment at United's Aon complex, and according to Sky Sports News, he is expected to be fit for selection for the showdown against Arsenal at Old Trafford.

Rooney has had to settle for a spot on the bench numerous times under manager Jose Mourinho this season, but he made his return to the first XI in United's last league outing - a 3-1 victory over Swansea City on November 6.
