Premier League in numbers: Matchday 3 preview

Sports Mole previews this weekend's Premier League fixtures, with the aid of a selection of statistics from each game taking place.

Another weekend of Premier League action is upon us, which gets underway with Manchester United's home clash against Newcastle United this afternoon.

The Red Devils have made a perfect start to their campaign so far, as have local rivals Manchester City who are looking to make it nine top-flight wins in a row when they face Everton.

Liverpool and Leicester City are the other two clubs to have so far racked up a 100% winning start, and they take on Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur respectively over the coming days.

It has been a slow start for Sunderland at the other end of the table, meanwhile, with an out-of-sorts Black Cats side taking on a very much in-form Swansea City at the Stadium of Light.

Here, Sports Mole takes a look at the third round of fixtures, with a selection of statistics from each game taking place to whet the appetite.

Manchester United vs. Newcastle United

Man United have won five of their last six Premier League clashes with Newcastle (L1) and have lost just two of their last 25 top-tier encounters with the Magpies (W18 D5).

Wayne Rooney has scored 12 goals and assisted seven more in 20 Prem appearances against Newcastle.

Newcastle have lost more Premier League games against the Red Devils than any other side (25).

Morgan Schneiderlin has run further than any other Man Utd player in both of their league games so far in 2015-16 (7.7 miles vs. Spurs, 8.1 miles vs. Villa).

Crystal Palace vs. Aston Villa

The last four top-tier clashes between these two sides have produced just three goals in total.

Palace have lost four of their last five Premier League games at Selhurst Park, conceding exactly two goals in each of these defeats.

Villa are looking to win back-to-back away games in the Premier League for the first time since their opening two away trips last season.

The Villans have scored just two goals in their last 10 trips to London in the Premier League, but both of these goals have sealed 1-0 wins.

Leicester City vs. Tottenham Hotspur

Leicester have won four successive home games - they haven't won five in a row in the top flight since April 1984.

Harry Kane has scored four Premier League goals against Leicester City; more than versus any other opponent.

The Foxes have never won their opening three matches of a top-flight season.

Despite winning all six points available so far this season, City have completed fewer passes in their opening two games than any other side (407).

Norwich City vs. Stoke City

Norwich have lost one of their last 10 league meetings with Stoke at Carrow Road (W5 D4 L1), while the last seven league meetings between these two sides overall have seen a total of just nine goals scored.

The Canaries have attempted 20 shots from outside the box (inc. blocked); more than any other side in 2015-16.

Bradley Johnson has scored the first goal of the game in the last two Premier League meetings between these sides at Carrow Road.

Alex Neil has won 18 of his 27 competitive games in charge of Norwich City; predecessor Neil Adams managed just 11 wins from 32 matches.

Sunderland vs. Swansea City

Sunderland have kept a clean sheet in three of their four Premier League home games against the Swans, but the Welsh outfit have lost just one of their eight Prem games against the Black Cats (W2 D5 L1).

Jefferson Montero has embarked on 19 dribbles in the Premier League after two matchdays; more than any other player.

Sunderland have not won a Premier League home game after conceding the first goal since December 2011 (vs. Blackburn), losing 20 and drawing eight of the 28 matches since.

No player has created more goalscoring chances in the Premier League so far in 2015-16 than Jonjo Shelvey (9 - level with Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla).

West Ham United vs. Bournemouth

This will be the first league meeting between West Ham and Bournemouth since April 1990 and only their third overall in league competition.

The Cherries have given Premier League appearances to 10 different English players in their opening two games of 2015-16; more than any other side.

Bournemouth have lost their opening two games - only one of the six newly-promoted sides to lose their opening three games of a PL season has gone on to avoid relegation (Southampton in 2012-13).

Goalkeeper Adrian will miss this match for West Ham following his red card against Leicester - the Spaniard had started each of the last 58 PL matches for the Hammers. Stand-in stopper Darren Randolph has conceded 16 goals in his last three appearances against Bournemouth, including 12 in two games last term.

West Bromwich Albion vs. Chelsea

West Brom defeated Chelsea 3-0 at home last season; the joint-heaviest defeat that Jose Mourinho has ever suffered in the Premier League.

No team has defeated WBA more often in the Premier League than Chelsea (13 wins, level with Arsenal).

No team has won the top-flight title after gaining exactly one point from their opening two games since Liverpool in 1981-82.

Mourinho's last six league defeats have come against a manager who has a surname starting in P (Tony Pulis (twice), Gus Poyet, Alan Pardew, Mauricio Pochettino, Manuel Pellegrini).

Everton vs. Manchester City

The Toffees have kept six clean sheets in their last 10 Premier League home matches.

Roberto Martinez has won only two points in 12 Premier League games against the Citizens as a manager (W0 D2 L10).

City have only won three of their previous 18 Premier League trips to Goodison Park (L10 D5).

Man City are now on an eight game winning run in the Premier League; their best PL run of wins since January 2014.

Watford vs. Southampton

Watford have lost just one of their last six competitive meetings at Vicarage Road against the Saints (W4 D1 L1).

The next goal scored at Vicarage Road will be the 100th Premier League goal scored at the home of Watford.

It took Quique Sanchez Flores until his fourth La Liga game as a manager before he picked up his first victory (losing the first three) - this will be his third Premier League game after drawing the first two in charge of Watford.

No side are on a longer current run of failing to keep a clean sheet in the Premier League than Southampton (eight games).

Arsenal vs. Liverpool

Arsenal have lost just one of their last seven Premier League games against Liverpool (W4 D2 L1), but only Man United (21) have secured more Prem wins against the Gunners than Liverpool (16).

Olivier Giroud's next Premier League appearance will be his 100th. He's scored 42 goals in 99 PL apps for Arsenal - only Thierry Henry (59), Ian Wright (56) and Emmanuel Adebayor (44) scored more in their first 100 PL apps for the club.

Liverpool have only allowed their opponents three shots on target in their two Premier League games in 2015-16 so far; fewer than any other side.

This fixture has seen more hat-tricks than any other in Premier League history (5).
