Manchester United have booked an FA Cup quarter-final tie against Arsenal by coming from behind to beat Preston North End 3-1 this evening.

Scott Baird fired the hosts into the lead with a low strike that took a deflection and squirmed past David de Gea.

However, Ander Herrera curled in an equaliser and seven minutes later Marouane Fellaini smashed an effort into the top corner, after his initial header had been saved.

With two minutes left to play Wayne Rooney converted a penalty that he had won to finally seal the victory.

Find out how the action unfolded below.

Good evening everyone! What a weekend it has been in the FA Cup. Following the huge shocks we saw in the fourth round, there have been more Premier League casualties, with the likes of Bradford continuing their incredible run. Tonight, Manchester United will be hoping to steer clear of an upset and book their place in the quarter-finals as they visit League One promotion chasers Preston North End.

The Reds have not won the cup for 11 years, but with a number of their biggest rivals dropping out of the competition they will surely have their sights firmly set on a record 12th win by the end of the season. They have been heavily criticised for their performances over recent weeks, but they have only lost one of the last 18 games and sit third in the league.

Their opponents this evening are Preston side who are in the thick of a promotion battle. They are currently fourth in the League One table and are just four points behind second-placed Swindon, with a game in hand. A run of seven games without a win in January has halted their progress slightly, but with three successive victories they look firmly back on track.

TEAM NEWS: We've just received the team news from Deepdale and United are taking no chances, as the likes of Wayne Rooney, Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria all start. Daley Blind plays after shaking off a head injury, but Robin van Persie and Phil Jones have both been ruled out.

PRESTON XI: Stuckmann, Clarke, Huntington, Wright, Laird, Humphrey, Welsh, Kilkenny, Gallagher, K. Davies and Garner

MAN UTD XI: De Gea, Valencia, Smalling, Rojo, Shaw, Blind, Herrera, Rooney, Fellaini, Di Maria, Falcao

PRESTON SUBS: Hudson, Wiseman, Reid, King, Robinson, Brownhill, Ebanks-Blake

MAN UTD SUBS: Valdes, Evans, McNair, Januzaj, Mata, Young, Wilson

I mentioned that we witnessed some major shocks in the fourth round of the FA Cup and Man Utd were one of those teams on the wrong end of an upset of sorts. They were held to a goalless draw by League Two outfit Cambridge, with manager Louis van Gaal blaming the pitch and the referee for the result and not the performance of his players.

Things went as planned in the replay at United romped to a 3-0 victory at Old Trafford, although it could have been very different if Tom Elliott had scored instead of hitting the post inside the opening minute. It has left them well on course to end their barren run in the cup and with Arsenal and Liverpool their only major opponents they will be desperate not to slip up today.

Aside from an early exit against MK Dons in the League Cup, you would expect United fans to be happy with their club's position in the league. They currently occupy the final automatic Champions League qualifying spot and with Manchester City just five points ahead of them, a strong end to the season could result in an unlikely second-place finish.

However, despite a run of 12 wins from their last 18 games, the Reds have received a huge amount of criticism from fans and former players. Just last week United great Paul Scholes said that he was "struggling to watch Louis van Gaal's team with any great enjoyment" and claimed that United were playing "miserable" football.

Following their 3-1 win against Burnley last time out Van Gaal admitted that he "didn't like" their performance and warned that if they played the same they would be knocked out of the cup tonight. It does seem that the Dutchman is yet to figure out his preferred formation and it may not be until the start of next season that we see a settled United lineup.

Let's take a look at Preston now, who will be hoping to replicate the stunning success of their League One counterparts Bradford in this season's cup. They did have a bit of a dip in form at the start of the year, but a victory over Sheffield United in their fourth-round replay seems to have sparked a bit of a revival ahead of a very crucial period.

They are still very much in with a chance of finishing in the top two and securing an automatic place, although a spot in the play offs seems to be more likely at this moment in time. After tonight's tie they will resume their busy league schedule with two home games against Scunthorpe United and Walsall, before facing a trip to top-six rivals Oldham.

Preston have been involved in this season's cup from the very first round. Their run started with a comfortable 3-0 win over Havant & Waterlooville, before they edged out League Two leaders Shrewsbury. In the third round they caused a bit of an upset with a win over Championship side Norwich and despite a draw against Sheffield United in the fourth round, they came from behind to win 3-1 in the replay at Bramall Lane to set up today's clash.

It has been quite a while since Preston reached this stage of the competition, but you have to go back to 1966 for when they progressed to the sixth round. They have managed to lift the cup twice, in 1889 and 1938, and they have been runners up on a further five occasions.

The odds may be firmly stacked against the Lilywhites, but their manager Simon Grayson was the architect of a major cup shock against United five years ago. His Leeds United side made the trip to face their long-term rivals at Old Trafford and a first-half strike from Jermaine Beckford secured a memorable 1-0 victory. Leeds then came from behind to snatch a 2-2 draw against Tottenham in the next round, before eventually falling to a 3-1 defeat in the replay.

Before we kick off at Deepdale this evening, the draw for the sixth round is just about to take place so Preston and United will both know who they will be facing. Liverpool, Arsenal, Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion are the Premier League sides who have made it through, with Bradford, Blackburn and Reading flying the flag for the lower leagues.

PREDICTION: As we await the draw for the sixth round, it's time for a quick prediction of tonight's match. With all the shocks we have had in this season's FA Cup, you just wonder if we will be witness to something special again. However, it's hard to see Man Utd slipping up and although they haven't been at their best, they are still grinding out important results. I expect that trend to continue tonight, so I will tip the Reds to claim a 2-0 win and book their place in the last eight.

FA CUP SIXTH-ROUND DRAW: The draw has just been made for the last eight and here's how it looks. Liverpool will welcome Blackburn to Anfield, Bradford are at home to Reading, Preston or Man Utd will take on Arsenal and Aston Villa are up against Midlands rivals West Brom.

Well, the standout tie from the quarter-finals looks to be a potential clash between Arsenal and Manchester United, should the Reds avoid a shock this evening. It really does look wide open and I feel that Liverpool fans will be the happiest after that draw.

Right, the players are out on the pitch and the fans are in full voice around the ground. We should have some cup tie on our hands and it is just moments away from kicking off!

KICKOFF! Preston take the kick off and get the match underway at Deepdale!

As you would expect, United are dominating the possession in the early stages and they are seeing plenty of the ball deep inside the Preston half of the pitch. They manage to win an early corner after some good work by Shaw, but Rooney's delivery is cleared and when the ball comes back out to the England captain the hosts once again deal with his cross.

Preston have their first chance to put the United defence under some pressure when Blind gives away a free kick on the halfway line. They send plenty of their players forward from the back, but the set piece from Kilkenny is poor and ends up floating harmlessly out of play.

The hosts manage a strike on goal when they pinch the ball and get it forward quickly to Garner. The forward then finds some space and drills in a strike, but his shot lacks the power to trouble De Gea. Moments later United break and Di Maria tries to thread Rooney through on goal, but his pass is just slightly overhit and it runs through to the keeper.

This is a very decent spell in the game for Preston, who are getting the ball down and playing it confidently around their midfield. They are also mixing up their play by lofting some dangerous balls into the box, and with Davies in the attack, they are sure to win quite a few challenges.

SHOT! United have not posed too much threat in the final third, but they win a free kick in a promising area just outside the box. Di Maria steps up to take it and looks to curl a strike into the bottom corner, but his effort heads wide of the post with the keeper left stranded.

The visitors spring to life and Shaw gets down the left before whipping a low cross into the box. It finds Rooney, who then looks to slot an effort past Stuckmann, but Welsh is back to make a fantastic last-ditch block and clear the danger.

It's all a bit scrappy at the moment and United have struggled to put together a great deal of passes. Preston must be given a huge amount of credit, as they are putting the Reds under pressure every time they are on the ball and are not giving them any time to think.

Di Maria has shown a few signs of his undoubted quality this evening and he whips in a teasing free kick from the right wing. It bends all the way to the back post where Falcao is arriving, but the Colombian can't quite get there in time and the ball heads just wide.

CHANCE! This has got to go down as a chance for the hosts. A free kick from the right is whipped into the box by Gallagher and Garner comes to meet it. He can't quite get over the ball and ends up sending his header over the bar, but the United defence were far from convincing.

Things really aren't coming off for Falcao at the moment. Di Maria goes past a couple of challenges and then slides a pass to the striker on the edge of the box. He then looks to turn and take the ball in his stride, but his touch lets him down and it goes all the way through to the keeper.

At the moment, I'm sure United fans will be looking back to their draw at Cambridge and wondering if their team will be in for another frustrating night. They started the game on the front foot, but it has all gone a bit quiet for them now and they are really struggling to create any notable chances.

You can understand the crisiticm of United's recent performances and Van Gaal will not be happy at what he has seen from his team today. A couple of poor passes from Rooney and Falcao in the last few minutes has really summed up what has been a disappointing first-half display so far.

YELLOW CARD! The first booking of the evening goes to veteran striker Davies, after his late challenge leaves Herrera on the deck.

Rooney is almost in behind when Di Maria plays a raking ball over the top that leaves the defence stranded. The run from the striker was good, but the pass is just in front of him and Stuckmann is able to gather.

United are enjoying their best period in the game as we approach the break and they almost work another chance. Once again, Di Maria is the creator, as he lifts a ball into the box for Falcao. The Colombian takes the ball down and lays it off for Rooney, but Wright is there to make a brilliant tackle before he can shoot.

We are going to have one minute of stoppage time.

HALF-TIME: Preston North End 0-0 Manchester United

We've reached the halfway stage of the evening and it's still goalless between Preston and Man Utd. It hasn't been the greatest game to watch in all honesty, but the hosts will clearly be delighted at how they have played.

United have seen plenty of the ball and they enjoyed 71% of the possession in the first half. Despite this, they have only managed three shots on goal, which is the same amount as the home side.

The Reds have really struggled in the final third and you just wonder when Louis Van Gaal will make any changes. Juan Mata and Adnan Januzaj seem the most likely options, while youngster James Wilson could be introduced up front, with Robin van Persie out injured.

The players have just made their way out of the dressing rooms and we are now just a short while away from the start of the second half.

United kick off and get the match back underway!

GOAL! Preston North End 1-0 Manchester United (Scott Laird)

What a start to the second half! We could well be in for another shock in this season's FA Cup as Preston take the lead! Laird is the man who scores, as he is picked out on the edge of the box by Garner before driving a low strike past De Gea. The ball seemed to take a slight deflection off Valencia and it catches the keeper off guard. Can Preston now hold on and book a quarter-final tie against Arsenal?

YELLOW CARD! Laird picks up a booking for his celebrations following the goal, but I'm sure that at this moment in time he won't care one bit!

CHANCE! United are living dangerously and they are very lucky not to concede again here. Gallagher floats a dangerous free kick to the back post that is missed by Davies, before coming through to Clarke. He gets a slight touch on the ball under pressure, but can't quite do enough to send it goalwards and trouble De Gea.

The visitors are pressing hard for a response, but they are still finding it hard to cause problems for the Preston defence. Even when they do manage to slip Shaw in down the left, the full back's cross is poor and comes nowhere near to picking out his teammates in the box.

SHOT! Di Maria has looked the most likely to make a difference for United and he tries his luck from around 30 yards out. He drills in a low strike which has plenty of power, but it is far too close to Stuckmann who does well to hold on.

The Reds are knocking at the door now and they are starting to find some gaps in the Preston backline. This time it's Valencia who is freed down the right and he puts in a great cross that looks as if it will make it's way through to Fellaini, but Clarke is there with a great header that steals it away from the Belgian.

SUBSTITUTION: United make the first change of the evening, with the disappointing Falcao being replaced by Young.

CHANCE! United have been really poor at the back since the break and they are almost caught out as a long ball into the box finds the head of Garner. The striker then looks to guide a header into the corner, but he doesn't get enough power on the ball and it goes straight into De Gea's gloves.

GOAL! Preston North End 1-1 Manchester United (Ander Herrera)

United are back on level terms, but it's a controversial goal from Herrera. He is found inside the box by Young and sorts out his feet to curl a strike into the bottom corner, but Rooney was standing right in front of the keeper and seemed to restrict his view. Preston were furious with the referee, yet the goal is given and United will now be firm favourites to complete the comeback in the last 25 minutes.

YELLOW CARD! Kilkenny is the third Preston player to be shown a card for a foul on Young.

YELLOW CARD! It's United's turn to pick up a booking, with Rojo going into the referee's notebook for a foul just outside the box on Garner.

CHANCE! Gallagher has taken some great set pieces this evening and he steps up to take the free kick that was just won by Garner. He looks to curl an effort into the top left-hand corner, but it ends up going just over the bar.

Preston can consider themselves very fortune to not be down to 10 men here. Davies, who was booked in the first half, goes in with a crunching late tackle on Smalling, but Phil Dowd decides not to book him.

GOAL! Preston North End 1-2 Manchester United (Marouane Fellaini)

Our chances of an upset look to be slim now, as the Reds turn this game around with two goals in the space of seven minutes. Valencia does well to get to the byline and he delivers a fine cross to the back post for Fellaini. The Belgian sees his initial header kept out by Stuckmann, but he makes no mistake to fire the rebound into the top corner and give United the lead.

TRIPLE SUBSTITUTION: Simon Grayson is going to use all his subs up in one go here with a triple change. Robinson, Wiseman and Reid are all coming on, with Davies, Wright and Kilkenny making way.

CHANCE! Fellaini comes close to scoring his second goal of the evening when he collects a pass from Di Maria inside the box, before turning his marker and firing in a strike that is well blocked by the keeper. The Belgian has certainly made a great impact in a more forward role since the break.

CHANCE! It's been a while since we saw Preston as an attacking force, but they come close to scoring here. Rojo is only able to clear to the edge of the box, where substitute Reid arrives to drill a low strike just wide of the post.

SHOT! Valencia has had a great second half, but he gives the ball away cheaply to Robinson in acres of space. The forward then takes a touch and fires in a strike from range, but it was hit straight down the middle and De Gea easily claims.

PENALTY TO MANCHESTER UNITED! United will have the chance to wrap up the win here, as Rooney touches the ball past the defence and bursts into the box, before he is taken out by the on-rushing Stuckmann. The keeper is shown a yellow card for the foul and now Rooney himself will take the penalty.

GOAL! Preston North End 1-3 Manchester United (Wayne Rooney)

Rooney makes no mistake from the spot with a fine strike into the corner that sends Stuckmann the wrong way. It has ended a run of nine games without a goal for the England captain and it looks to have confirmed his side's passage to the last eight.

We are going to have four minutes of stoppage time.

CHANCE! Preston have a late chance to pull a goal back when Laird meets a corner at the front post that is saved by De Gea, before being cleared off the line by Young. The hosts would fully deserve a second goal for the way that they have played this evening.

FULL-TIME: Preston North End 1-3 Manchester United

It's all over and Manchester United have set up a mouth-watering tie against Arsenal in the quarter-finals. They were pushed hard by the home side, who put in a great shift, but their class told in the end as they were able to avoid an upset.

That's all we've got time for after another great night of FA Cup action. I'm sure everyone is already looking forward to that sixth-round tie between United and the cup holders Arsenal and I for one can't wait! I hope you have enjoyed our coverage this evening, until next time, goodbye!
