How Manchester United could line up against Partizan

Sports Mole looks at how Manchester United could line up for their meeting with Partizan in the Europa League on Thursday.

Manchester United resume their European campaign on Thursday with a trip to face Partizan in the Europa League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men head into the encounter with their confidence boosted following a decent performance during a 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday, but they will be wary of the fact that they have not won away from home in 11 games.

United come up against an acutely organised Partizan side which has only lost one of their nine home games so far this season.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how the Red Devils could line up for this fixture.

Solskjaer has been forced to contend with a series of injury problems, the most recent being Tuanzebe picking up a hip injury during the warm-up ahead of the clash with Liverpool.

The youngster would have likely started this game in Belgrade but his injury, along with the continued absence of Shaw and Dalot, means that Solskjaer has little choice other than to start with Ashley Young at left-back.

However, the return of Phil Jones from injury, combined with the impressive showing from Marcos Rojo on Sunday, means that the Norwegian can rest first-choice pair Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire.

News of Matic, along with Shaw, heading to Dubai as part of a rehabilitation program this week leaves United painfully short of a holding midfielder, which the Premier League club will need when trying to break down a Partizan side sitting deep in its own half.

One of United's main problems this season has been breaking down defensive opponents - something which was clear against Newcastle United - and it therefore makes sense to hand a full senior debut to James Garner, the most sophisticated player of the ball from United's academy.

The youngster has been often compared with Michael Carrick for his metronomic, precise passing style, and such an influence could be exactly what the team needs on Thursday.

Further forward, Juan Mata is likely to be included on the basis of a similar line of thinking, coming in from a wide position to provide clever balls in behind and locate pockets of space, with the rapid Daniel James serving as another source of penetration from the other side.

Solskjaer will be determined to compliment Garner's passing along with the aforementioned attacking duo by handing Anthony Martial his first start since August.

The Frenchman returned to the pitch on Sunday and looks likely to be used in place of Marcus Rashford, who needs to be rotated smartly throughout a nine month season.

Martial's movement in the number nine role is absolutely crucial for opening up spaces and ensuring that attacking movements have a reference point on the last line of Partizan's defence. Without it, United supporters could end up witnessing a similar game to the 0-0 draw with AZ Alkmaar.
